So, there I was (of course all good stories begin with, “So, there I was…”) at the gym working out. Today was a cardio day. In front of me are 5 television screens. Personally, I like watching the one with ESPN showing, but since they can’t get enough these days of “What will Tom Brady do?” “Is LeBron the MVP over Giannis?” I had to watch something different.

What were on the other screens? A whole lotta red numbers. Each screen was focused on the stock market. Yes, it has had a pretty lousy March (does that saying “In like a lion, out like a lamb” apply here?). But, today was the worst. At start of the day, the DOW was down over 1,500. As I watched, it prompted the “Circuit Breaker” to halt trading for 15 minutes. That was because it had fallen over 7% in one day. Ouch!

What was the cause? Your guess is as good as mine. More than likely the people are scared over the coronavirus and its affect on our world. There was also a story about the oil markets crashing over 30%.

Put it all together: Coronavirus, 30% drop in oil, 7% drop in stocks! What does it all mean?! DOOMSDAY!

How are you feeling? It is extremely hard to ignore the media. I mean, you can’t even go workout without the media telling you the woeful news. Is it doomsday? Is this the end?

Only if God says so.

There was a passage which immediately popped into my head as I saw all those doomsday headlines crossing the television screen this morning. It comes from the very first book of the Bible and this verse is still true to this day. Here it is: “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” (Genesis 8:22).

I know there are several ways we, as humans, have tried to destroy this planet we call earth. I also know we think we are in complete control of our lives. Then, we have a day like today. And, even if we think we are in control, we see how we aren’t even close to being in control. But, I am glad we are not in control. Do you know who is? God.

Think about that passage – we don’t need to worry because the world will continue to exist, winter and summer will come, day and night will follow the pattern they have been following for thousands of years. Why? Because God says so. And, he is the one in charge.

Then, think about the first part of that passage: As long as the earth endures. Well, when will the earth no longer endure? Will it cease to end because of a virus? Will it stop existing because of an oil crisis or a dramatic drop in the stock market? Are those the reasons the world will end? I am not much of a historian, but I am pretty sure those things have happened before (Black Death, SARS, Great Depression etc.). And, what has happened? Just like God said: “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

I don’t want to make light of the situation. It isn’t good. It is less pleasant if you have or will be infected with the virus. It will not be easy if you are watching your retirement dwindle lower and lower until you realize you have to work a few more years to make up for this drop. Problems will come. Jesus promised us that. He said that “In this world you will have trouble. But, take heart, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33). We will have these days of trouble. But, in all things, Jesus has overcome those problems. That includes the very problems we are facing this very day and moment.

God said there will be signs of the end. Could these be some of those signs? Sure. But, is it doomsday? Well, it has never been doomsday. Why? Because God hasn’t said so yet. Instead, God uses those awful events to get us to do something – to look to him; to trust in him; to rely solely on him and not our health or our wealth.

Trust me, when doomsday (Judgment Day) comes, you will know. Better yet, don’t trust me…trust God. When God finally says enough is enough, there will be no stopping it. All we will be able to do is just like his word says, “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28).

You see, when doomsday actually comes, we will not need to fear. Instead, we can be filled with joy because on that day, we will be set free from all viruses, all stock crashes, all problems. Because on that day, we will see Jesus!

How do I know? Because God said so!
